HTC Software. it's needed to pass thru the internet connection from computer to smartphone

I am not as experienced as some on the internets or darknets...but consider myself well educated on network security and penetration testing. I would image that with some advanced knowledge of usb emulation and a small and discreet packet of code could be injected into a system to feed data to a remote server via a hidden spoofed HTC usb device. Advanced cmd knowledge and hobbyist level network skills would be needed to ever discover device existed. I lean toward threat...but without source code from HTC and a refresher course on usb emulation and com ports I can't say either way. I use HTCsync to gain drivers for the phones I need to modify. I uninstall HTCsync as soon as its done installing. Disabling the service from system as "dutch guest" described is not advisable if you actually us HTCsync. Stopping the service then setting it for manual start is best. (sc stop "PassThru Service") followed by (sc config "PassThru Service" start= demand) It's better to manually restart the service when you need it again. sc start "PassThru Service" All this can be done in windows by "right clicking" Computer and selecting Manage>Services and Applications>Services>Internet Pass-Through Service" The odds are not very high you will encounter someone with enough skill and desire to breach your system through methods involving passthruserv and usb ports (emulated or actual) but it is a potential portal through layers of security (possibly even a circumvention of ssh encryption if cmd line can be manipulated remotely with administrator privileges). So be careful and keep looking info like this up when you don't know. It's the only thing that will ever keep you safe from people like me who know enough to PWND you!!! "All knowledge is free. All you have to to do is pay attention long enough to find it."

This is the Internet pass through service for HTC phones so the computer can share its Internet connection with the phone. If you want to disable it, just set it to disabled in your control panel, services app.

The file runs as a process even though HTC Sync is not running as I took it out of startup. I only need HTC Sync when syncing to Outlook on my computer and my computer will load the program when I do a USB connection of phone. Passthrusvr.exe uses high memory, second only to IE Explorer and my computer is having memory problems so I want to turn it off except when I am using HTC Sync. It kept coming back after I terminated it with TASK Manager, except I notice it has not come back yet after terminating with your System Explorer. I only label it as a threat because it loads even though HTC Sync isn't open and it won't stay terminated.

The comment above from my dutch EU-Countryman is over carefull. HTC is a seriöse company and not a source of threat!

  • SAFErating from user ChimingIn for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

This appears to be safe. If you don't want it to run then you can turn off the "Internet Pass-Through Service" in services.msc.

I did not like the IMpossibility to terminate the process by using TaskManager at all. The PassThru Service is a component of software from HTC Sync, used by HTC mobile phone users. The process enables passing through your PC internet connection through USB, thus enabling to use your regular internetprovider to connect the phone to the internet, instead of using the mobile network (wich in some cases may get a little expensive) I am afraid that, while this process is running, there is a live and maybe even unprotected internet connection directly into your USB connected device. NO MATTER WHAT DEVICE I presume, it may get an instant and maybe even unprotected (by antivirus-software) live internet connection. That is not what I prefer, and yiihaa I FOUND THE WAY TO TERMINATE it Here it is: open the command window and type to terminate sc stop "PassThru Service" type to prevent from running at system start-up sc config "PassThru Service" start= disabled please take note of the SPACE just before the last word type to delete from system registry sc delete "PassThru Service" Please note that after taking these steps, you cannot connect your HTC phone to your PC internet connection anymore. You may have to reinstall HTC Sync software, I am not sure. All use is at your own risk! It worked fine for me and I do not really need to connect my phone to my PC, other than for charging the battery. The rest on my phone I do all manually.

  • SAFErating from user Ciaren for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

It is completely safe it is so that when your phone is connected to your computer you can use your internet connection to your PC on your phone, by setting it in the USB connection mode on your phone.

  • THREATrating from user joeblow for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

Potential threat. I think the point is, why can't you kill the service easily. Why does it want to run all the time. You kill it and it just comes back. How often are you going to synch your phone with the PC. Not too often. Read some of their ULA's. They seem to like taking your info, data, and pics and giving them to others.

  • SAFErating from user Andy for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

This file is safe. HTC uses this file to upload data from your phone to their servers in order to allow you to use the find-your-phone function if it gets stolen. It's basically a safety measure and if you don't like it then stop using your phone or start thinking about meds, because you're probably suffering from paranoia.

  • SAFErating from user Cav for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

Owwie is being overly paranoid - like HTC is going to hack your computer The reason they have htis is because HTC devices support USB Tethering, using your phone as a modem. They also support using your PC as a modem for the phone (hence pass thru server)

  • SAFErating from user tjconcept for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

HTC software. Probably to allow tethering.

  • THREATrating from user Owwie for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

I find this to be a "suspect" file due to the name AND the purpose, which is never clearly stated by HTC. Why would I need to run a pass-thru for my network to "sync" my phone? Would a sync still work if I had no internet connection? If yes, then this service is not needed. Another question, what is HTC doing to/with my computer thru this service? I believe some better answers are in order before we deem this service "safe".

  • SAFErating from user ickis for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 504976)

yes it's really part of the HTC software.

  • SAFErating from user rob for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

This process appeared on my computer after I installed the HTC phone sync.

  • SAFErating from user Anonymous for file %PROGRAMFILES%\HTC\Internet Pass-Through\PassThruSvr.exe (Variant: 497149)

I believe this is to do with the connection to HTC devices, if you have ever plugged in a HTC phone device or installed HTC sync on your computer then this is probably what it is!
